Orchestral music is rich, exciting and varied, and SYO is a fun place to explore this amazing world.
There are two complete symphony orchestras for players of differing standards, from Grade 4-8 and beyond. We perform ambitious orchestral repertoire and have high expectations for all our members. Through weekly rehearsals and termly concerts we offer a rigorous training in orchestral skills, many of which are valuable, transferrable skills for life!
Advanced players are also encouraged to perform solo items with the orchestras in our series of concerts. Many past members are now professional musicians themselves having left SYO to enter music college or university to study music whilst others have sought different professions yet continue to perform music as a hobby.
We share facilities with Stockport Music Service and have links to SMS groups for players who do not yet make this standard (e.g. Beginner and Intermediate String Groups).
The Stockport Youth Orchestra is run by the Patrons’ Society, supported by a grant from the Children & Young People’s Directorate of the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport.
The Society of Patrons:
- Funds the orchestras through orchestral and patron membership fees and sponsorship
- Engages the services of the Musical Director, Assistant Musical Director and instrumental tutors
- Actively publicises and supports the Orchestra’s concerts and functions
The Patrons Society is a properly constituted body, its affairs run by a committee working in close liaison with the Orchestra’s own management, and with representatives of the Borough.
